While I was recently in California, I wrote two poems about rain.
Here they are for your reading enjoyment.
Poem 1: Good Morning Rain
Early this morning I woke up to The sound of an owl calling Sending its hoots into the darkness, The abyss of the air before dawn I couldn’t help but smile “I hear you,” I said in my mind I hear you Later this morning I awoke again to The gentle sound of rain Pitter-pattering outside my window, Falling from the sky Landing softly on the earth below I smiled again “What a pleasant way to start the day,” I said in my mind No alarm, nowhere to be, Just rain awakening me— Causing me to stir To come alive To be. Even later still I sat and contemplated The world outside the window Watched as the clouds parted And the sun began to shine It’s brilliant rays beaming on the lush flowers below Then I watched as the clouds began to gather again All this change in only a few hours What can it teach me about life? How can I be more like nature? Calling out for what I want Not being afraid of the dark… Letting go of what I can no longer carry Shedding burdens big and small… Embracing change Then shifting all over again? Teach me your ways, Mother Earth, So that I may truly say “Oh, what a beautiful morning Oh, what a beautiful day”
Poem 2: Rainfall & Slow Mornings
Raindrops falling from the clouds Misty gray fog hangs in the air Birdsong scarce, but beautiful Sleeping through the night Waking rested, to a gentle breeze A “slow morning,” indeed Peaceful breakfasts-- Eggs, scrambled Butter, spread on toast Fruit, sliced Juice, poured Tea, steeped Sitting still, We are ready. Ready for life.
